Sporting Lisbon have confirmed Leonardo Jardim as their new coach, replacing Jesualdo Ferreira who was relieved of his position on Sunday.
Jardim, who has been out of work since leaving Greek side Olympiakos in January, is set to sign a two-year contract with the Portuguese club.
He has previously managed Beira-Mar and Braga, and returns to the Primeira Liga after departing for Greece in 2012.
Sporting endured a difficult domestic season in 2012-13, ending the campaign in seventh position. They did, however, finish their season with a 4-1 victory away to bottom side Beira-Mar.
President Bruno de Carvalho paid respect to out-going boss Ferreira, and said both parties ended the relationship on good terms.
“Everybody at Sporting thanks him for his dedication,” he told the club’s official website.
“This whole process was treated with complete and mutual respect.”
Ferreira admitted the decision was difficult to take.
“Training this club was a blessing from God,” he added.
“The decision has nothing to do with finances and I am sad. This is one of the hardest moments of my career, but it is also a moment of honesty.”
