Barcelona’s newest hero, Jeffren Suarez, is hoping he can continue to make an impact for his side in Saturday’s La Liga trip to face Osasuna.
Jeffren, 22, came off the bench to score the final goal in Barcelona’s record-equalling 5-0 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the ‘Clasico’ at Camp Nou on Monday.
The Venezuelan-born Barcelona youth product remains buoyed by the defending champions’ latest victory, but is not expecting an easy ride when the Catalan giants visit the Estadio Reyno de Navarra.
“It’s a match that’ll be complicated,” Jeffren said.
“The last two times we’ve played there, things weren’t easy, and it’s going to be cold. This year Osasuna hasn’t lost a single match at home. It’s going to be tough match. We’re going to try our best and let’s see what happens.”
Jeffren’s extra-time strike matched the previous biggest win by a Barcelona side over Real, also 5-0, recorded in 1994.
“Yes, it was a historical goal and a great happiness for me and now it’s time to keep on working,” he said.
“It was a very happy day; and it was a day of great joy the day after as well, but we’re now playing against Osasuna, we have to think in the next match, which is very important.”
Jeffren, who only made a handful of appearances for the Barcelona first team since joining from Tenerife in 2004, is under no illusions about the challenge he faces to secure a regular match-day spot.
“It’s gonna’ be hard, whether they play good or bad it’s a team with the best players of the world and it’s going to be tough to have a permanent place for me there,” Jeffren said.
The young winger was also questioned about where the current Barcelona team ranks alongside some of the great world football from the past.
“We have to let the years go by and then we’ll see who’s the best … we’ll just keep fighting to see if we can win more titles,” he said.
“This team is anxious to win and there could be better performances to come.”
