Manchester United’s Phil Jones hopes his side have redeemed themselves in the eyes of their supporters after a 4-1 victory over Wolves.
United bowed out of the Champions League on Wednesday after losing their final group game 2-1 to Basel, and must now compete in the Europa League for the first time since the tournament was renamed.
It will be the first time United have played in Europe’s second-tier club competition since the 1995/96 season, when it was known as the UEFA Cup.
But Sir Alex Ferguson’s charges bounced back in the Premier League by thumping Wolves at Old Trafford, with Wayne Rooney and Nani scoring a brace each, and Jones said the fans deserved a strong performance.
“We owed one to all the fans who travelled out there (to Basel),” Jones said.
“Hopefully we showed them what we are all about with a great performance.”
United are two points behind Manchester City, but have played one game more than the league leaders.
