Keller delighted with Schalke spirit

Manager Jens Keller was delighted after Schalke came from behind twice to beat Eintracht Braunschweig 3-2 on Saturday.

After one defeat in their previous five matches Schalke were surprised by their hosts on two occasions but goals from Leon Goretzka and Roman Neustadter secured a fourth win of the season.

Keller admitted his men were a little fortunate to get the winner in the first minute of stoppage time, but felt his side had shown good battling qualities to secure the three points.

“We are obviously delighted and very happy that we’ve managed to take this lucky and scrappy win,” he said. “I think Braunschweig did a great job.

“They kept the space very tight and we couldn’t really find a way to create chances.

“Nevertheless we are still happy that we’ve managed to get the three points despite our current situation with so many players out through injury.

“I think we played with the youngest team that Schalke has ever put on a pitch.

“On top of that two youngsters (Max Meyer and Goretzka) scored the goals which I am very happy about.

“One other thing I could highlight is the great moral of my team. Coming back from being 1-0 to then win 2-1, in such a hostile atmosphere, it showed great morale and we are very pleased to take the three points with us.”

The win leaves Schalke in fifth place in the Bundesliga table, while Braunschweig remain bottom after a seventh defeat of the campaign.
