Itumeleng Khune says he is relishing his new role as Kaizer Chiefs captain, having first turned down the job two years ago.

Khune has taken to the captain’s armband like a duck to water, helped in no small way by the presence of veterans Jimmy Tau and Siphiwe Tshabalala in the team.

“I was given the opportunity in 2009 and told the coach (Vladimir Vermezovic) that I wasn’t ready, but when the opportunity came the second time around I just had to raise my hand, I had to take responsibility,” Khune told Kickoff.com.

“I have been sharing a room with Jimmy for the past three seasons and he’s been a great leader.”

“Jimmy once mentioned to me that I’m the future captain of the club. In fact, Jimmy approached me and said he wanted to share a room with me because he felt he was going to learn a lot from me.”

“I thank him for his faith in me and I will still ask him for guidance. I think with his help, things are going to go well for me.”

“I’m lucky because we also have the Bafana Bafana vice-captain in the team (Tshabalala), and he has been helpful.”

And Khune is confident that he will make a success of his new role as team captain.

“I would think it will be an easy job for me because I have worked with so many leaders,” he said.

The Chiefs are second in the Premier Soccer League, three points behind leaders the Mamelodi Sundowns.
