Vincent Kompany believes it is a “tremendous gift” to be able to play in the DFB-Pokal final after Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the last four.

Harry Kane and Luis Diaz were on target for Bayern in a 2-0 win at BayArena, with the Bavarian club reaching their first DFB-Pokal showpiece since 2019-20, when they won the competition.

It was a dominant display, as Kompany’s side produced 2.6 xG from 20 shots to Leverkusen’s 0.3 from four attempts.

Kane scored his seventh goal in this DFB-Pokal season, the most by a player in a season in seven years (2018-19 Robert Lewandowski also seven).

Only Thomas Muller (eight in 2013-14) has scored more goals in a single edition of the competition in this millennium.

This will be Kompany’s first DFB-Pokal final since taking charge at the club, an achievement which is not lost on the Belgian coach.

“Since day one, everyone has been talking about Berlin. Being able to bring the club back there is a tremendous gift,” said Kompany.

“We played very well in the first half – high intensity, we didn’t allow them anything.

“Leverkusen came into the game better in the second half. They made us defend deeper, but we handled that well.

“We’re enjoying this time because it’s about titles, and we’re still in the mix for everything.”

Bayern have already clinched the Bundesliga title this term, while they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final.

Kompany insisted they will not look past their league fixture against Mainz this weekend, despite their semi-final first leg against PSG fast approaching.

“Theoretically, we’ll switch to Mainz, even though we’ve already secured the title,” added Kompany.

“We have a clear routine for how we prepare for matches. I don’t want to change the process because all games are important.”
