Dirk Kuyt has hailed a successful week at Wembley following victories for both Liverpool and the Netherlands at England’s national stadium.

Kuyt was part of the Liverpool team that overcame Cardiff City in a penalty shootout to win the Carling Cup on Sunday.

And he played the full 90 minutes for the Netherlands as they defeated England 3-2 in an international friendly on Wednesday.

“I think the Carling Cup final was brilliant, to get a trophy at Wembley, which is such a brilliant stadium,” Kuyt told FATV.

“But today also, we’re very pleased with the result.”

“It’s special to play at Wembley. It’s special to play against England and for us it was a very important game so we’re very pleased with the result.”

“We scored a couple of good goals, and I think England scored two very good goals as well.”

“We would have been more pleased with a clean sheet. Unfortunately that didn’t happen, but we still have a couple of months to be more than ready for the Euros.”

Kuyt attributed England’s late attempted comeback to the disruption caused by several second-half substitutions for the Netherlands.

“I think we played very well for 65 or 70 minutes,” he said.

“Then we made a couple of changes and it was more difficult for us but at the end of the day we won 3-2 at Wembley against a top country, so we’re very pleased with that.”

“But I think both sides tried to make the best of it and the England team was young, but there was still a lot of quality on the pitch.”

“For us it is very pleasing to beat England at their home ground, at Wembley. So a couple of months to go, and we’re really looking forward to the Euros.”
