Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert says it is only a matter of time before Brett Holman opens his scoring account for the Premier League side.

The former AZ Alkmaar star failed to net in his first six Premier League appearances since a close-season move from the Eredivisie side.

However, Lambert thinks that once Holman gets going, the Aston Villa fans will see the best from a player he describes as ‘creative’ and ‘brilliant’.

“(Holman’s) been unlucky not to score,” Lambert told the club’s official website.

“Ben Foster’s two saves in the West Brom game were unbelievable.

“But Brett’s playing really, really well at this time. He’s not shy to have a shot on goal and he’s a creative player.

“I always think if creative players can make things happen and score a goal or maybe slide the odd ball through, then you’ve got a player on your hands.”

The former Norwich boss went on to hail the Australian attacker’s work-rate but insisted his team-mates must also acknowledge their responsibility to score.

“He has done great; he’s got energy to burn. I’m really happy with the way he’s playing,” he continued.

“He’s been brilliant, and he’s a top lad as well. If he keeps going the way he’s going he’ll have a really good season.

“He’s got a great desire for the game, a great enthusiasm for the game.

“It’s important we share the goals around. We need that threat but Brett’s all-round game is good at the minute, really good.”

Lambert also paid tribute to his predecessor Alex McLeish, who secured the 28-year-old on a pre-contract deal prior to his sacking.

“If Alex McLeish scouted him then it’s great credit to him because he’s doing great for the club. I don’t know if Brett had offers from the Premier League before, he might have done,” the Scot said.

“Maybe teams did go in for him, I’m not so sure. But Aston Villa are fortunate to have him.”
