Language barrier to future Bundesliga move for Mourinho

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho believes language could prove a barrier to any prospect of plying his trade in Germany.

Portuguese tactician Mourinho has coached at the highest level in three of Europe’s biggest leagues, with Chelsea in the English Premier League, the Serie A with Inter Milan and now Real in La Liga.

The former Porto boss, who took over at the Santiago Bernabeu in May 2010, had been linked with a premature departure from the Spanish capital last season owing to his difficult relationship with Real sporting director Jorge Valdano.

Valdano was dismissed in May this year after losing out in the power struggle.

And Mourinho now appears relatively settled at the La Liga giants, but makes no secret of the fact he is sure to move on eventually.

“I’m not the kind of coach who stays at the same club in the same country for life,” he said.

“It’s something that makes me better, the fact that I’m in my fourth different country.”

“And working in countries like Italy, Spain and England makes you better and better.”

Mourinho said he would be interested in the challenge presented by a move to the Bundesliga, but would need to master German before seriously contemplating the prospect.

“I’d love it (to work in Germany) but to be fair, it’s very important in my skills as a coach to know the language,” he said.

“To communicate with the players, to be with the press in a very comfortable way because the media are a very important part of our job and I’d think I wouldn’t be at the top of my potential working in Germany, so it’s out of my mind.”

“But because of the quality of the game and of many things I understand in German football, yes I would like it.”
