Benfica kept the pressure on Liga Sagres table-toppers FC Porto after a 2-0 victory over Olhanense on Friday.
Jorge Jesus’ side entered the game full of confidence having won seven of their last eight Liga Sagres fixtures, the only loss being a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Porto.
But despite dominating from the outset at the Estadio da Luiz, the hosts had to wait until the 42nd minute to open their account via Paraguay striker Oscar Cardozo.
Cardozo’s goal was the pre-cursor to a spiteful second half, in which six yellow cards were handed out.
Benfica continued their ascendancy in the latter stages of the encounter and were rewarded in the 81st minute when Argentine striker Javier Saviola sealed victory.
The result leaves Benfica five points behind Porto, who have a game in hand, and six points clear of third-placed Vitoria Guimaraes.
Olhanense remain in 10th but can be overtaken by up to four sides over the weekend.
