Liverpool to build permanent Jota memorial at Anfield

Liverpool have confirmed they will build a permanent memorial to Diogo Jota at Anfield, following his passing in a car accident on July 3.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were both killed in a car crash in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Since then, thousands of supporters have left scarves, shirts, floral tributes and messages outside Anfield, as well as at Molineux – where Jota spent three years with Wolves between 2017 and 2020.

Liverpool have permanently retired Jota’s number 20 shirt across all their teams, including the academy and women’s sides, with the Portuguese becoming the first player in the club’s history to receive that honour.

The Reds have now announced plans to commemorate Jota with a permanent memorial sculpture outside their stadium, which will be made from recycled artefacts left by supporters.

Floral tributes, the club said, will be used in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield and the AXA Training Centre at Kirkby.

Liverpool also confirmed that players will wear a “Forever 20” patch on their shirts throughout the 2025-26 season, while a temporary area of reflection will be established for supporters to pay their respects at Anfield.

Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly, a 3-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13, featured several pre-match tributes to Jota and Silva.

The Reds’ first team will wear a different patch featuring Jota’s name and number throughout their pre-season tour of Asia, as they face Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos.
