When I heard the news that Liverpool had signed Ajax striker Luis Suarez for £22.8million I thought it was a superb signing.
The Uruguayan shone during the World Cup and has been scoring goals for fun in the Eredivisie.
Goals
Suarez is in a small group of players to have scored over a hundred goals in an Ajax shirt.
The standard of the Dutch top flight is nowhere near that of the Premier League but he’s still managed to score an exceptional amount of goals.
Opportunity
This move is an opportunity for Luiz Suarez to prove that he can play at the highest level of football. He has described his move to Liverpool as a “Dream move” and I’m sure he won’t prove a flop for the Reds.
Assists
Luis Suarez is about more than just goals though; he is a good team player. He creates chances for his teammates as well as scoring. He will be vital for Liverpool as a focal point and a creator in the next few months as they look to get back into the European places.
Partnership
He was brought in as help up front for star striker Fernando Torres. The thought of the two up front was mouthwatering for the Reds fans. However it remains to be seen if the Spaniard will be at the club much longer with Chelsea trying to snatch him before the transfer window shuts.
The Spaniard has now made it even worse for Liverpool fans by Torres requesting a transfer. The Reds have rejected that request but they are now in a difficult situation. There are only a few days until the transfer window shuts and the champions are expected to put in an improved bid.
Suarez will be even more important to Liverpool if they lose their best attacking player. He would then be expected to fill the Spaniard’s shoes, big boots to fill indeed.
Expectation
Liverpool fans will want Suarez to hit the ground run in the goalscoring stakes and he needs to make a good start. He should be allowed sometime to settle into a new country, culture and league, but in the Premier League sometimes you don’t get that time needed.
Controversy
In his short career he has been involved in a fair bit of controversy. There was the infamous incident during last year’s World Cup when the striker handled the ball on the goal line to save a last gasp goal against Ghana in the quarter-finals.
He was sent-off but Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty and Uruguay went on to win the game on penalties. Earlier this season he was also involved in another controversial incident. The striker was handed a seven match ban by the Dutch FA for biting PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal.
These two incidents show that he has a fiery temperament and a will-to-win. Every team needs a player with such characteristics.
Coup
Luis Suarez has been hot property in the last few years and this must be seen as a coup by Liverpool managing to sign the Uruguayan ahead of some other major clubs. The likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Barcelona were all believed to be interested in signing the striker.
However the other clubs didn’t want to pay the fee that Ajax was asking for the 24 year-old. Liverpool has come up with the fee and I’m sure they won’t regret the signing of Luis Suarez.
Will Luis Suarez be a good signing for Liverpool?
