Gareth Barry is to have a scan on the ankle he injured in Manchester City’s defeat by Tottenham on Wednesday, less than a week before Fabio Capello names England’s provisional World Cup squad.

Barry has established himself as one of Capello’s first-choice players and the England coach will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of the midfielder’s consultation with a specialist over an injury which has ruled him out of City’s final game of the season, at West Ham on Sunday.

Capello is due to name an initial 30-man squad on Tuesday and England are due to depart for a training camp in Austria on May 17. That selection will be whittled down to 23 after warm-up friendlies against Mexico, at Wembley on May 24, and Japan, in Graz, Austria, on May 30.

England kick off their World Cup campaign against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12.
