Roberto Martinez is remaining focused on keeping Wigan Athletic in the Premier League and not on his own future in football.

The 38-year-old sees his side languishing in the bottom three and has defended his decision to rest key players last weekend against Swansea.

Martinez told The Mirror: “I’m privileged to be Wigan ¬manager and all I want is the good of the club. If I was looking after my own interests, I wouldn’t have made decisions I made in the past.”

The Spaniard warned about looking too far ahead and expressed confidence in his ability to keep Wigan in the top flight.

“You always want to have ambitions, but in football you can’t plan. The game is so ruthless that the moment you look further than the next match it will punish you.”

“The future doesn’t worry me. We’ve 33 points to fight for. It’s vital we retain our Premier League status.”

Matinez’s side face Norwich in the Premier League on Sunday.
