Leighton Baines will be richly rewarded if he decides to stay at Everton, according to new boss Roberto Martinez.
The England left-back has been linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester United, where he would join up with former Everton manager David Moyes.
Baines signed a five-year deal at Goodison Park in 2010 but Martinez insisted that his performances since then merited a new offer on improved terms.
“It’s very important and it’s case of rewarding players who have been phenomenal for the football club,” the Spaniard said. “I think Leighton is in that category.
“For Leighton, as the top performer he has been in the last few years, it is important that we reward his work and make sure that he can look forward to kicking on to the next chapter of his career with Everton.
“That’s important for the club as a whole, not just the dressing room.”
Baines, 28, signed for Everton in 2007 from Martinez’s former club Wigan. He has since made over 200 appearances for the club and earned 17 England caps.
