Mata, Ferguson scoop October awards

Juan Mata and Sir Alex Ferguson have been named the Premier League player and manager of the month respectively for October.

Chelsea playmaker Mata collects the award having enjoyed an excellent month that saw him net twice in his side’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

The 24-year-old also curled a sublime free-kick into goal during Manchester United’s visit to Stamford Bridge.

Mata was quick to praise his team-mates upon receiving the award, most notably close-season signings Oscar and Eden Hazard, with whom the Spaniard has quickly formed an impressive understanding.

“I’m really enjoying (playing alongside them),” Mata told Sky Sports News. “They’re players who like to play with the ball, to assist and who have good movement – more or less like me.”

He later stated on his Twitter account: “Very happy for last month. Let’s keep working, there is a long way ahead.”

United manager Ferguson has steered his side to the top of the Premier League standings following four successive league wins.

A potent attack has been key to his side usurping Chelsea at the top of the table, Ferguson said.

“I’m pleased with our attacking play, that’s been a feature of our game,” the Scot said upon receiving the award for the 27th time of his career.

“We’ve had an issue about defending, but in Saturday’s win against Arsenal we were back to what I expect of Manchester United defenders.”
