McLeish warns Bannan over drinking

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has warned Barry Bannan he must change his lifestyle after his recent drink-driving charge.

The young midfielder was immediately suspended by the club following his arrest, though he is expected to be in the squad to face Tottenham on Monday.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has previously said he did not believe Premier League footballers should drink, and despite McLeish not going that far he says his players must choose their moments more wisely.

“No one is going to be too upset if any player has the odd glass of beer, but it’s got to be at the right times and be the odd glass,” McLeish told reporters.

“You have to be right, absolutely right physically; otherwise you cannot operate in the Barclays Premier League.”

“So, it’s a wake-up call for Barry and every young player out there.”

“I’ve had a few one-to-ones with him. And I’ve also spoken to the whole group about it.”

Aston Villa travel to White Hart Lane on Monday as they look to stop the in-form London outfit, who could move to third in the Premier League with a victory, depending on results involving Newcastle United and Chelsea.
