The New York Red Bulls have won the battle of the MLS’s glamour sides over the LA Galaxy, keeping their playoff hopes alive in the process.

Points are at a premium for the Red Bulls, who have largely flattered to deceive this season despite a squad possessing big names such as Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez.

But a 2-0 victory on Tuesday against the competition’s best side this season will have pleased their fans at the Red Bull Arena no end.

It was one of their lesser-heralded foreign players that put New York in front after 31 minutes, when Luke Rodgers poked home after Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Rickets parried Jan Solli’s header from a corner.

The Galaxy could feel aggrieved after looking the most likely before Rodgers’ goal, but the former Notts County forward could have put his side further ahead on 37 minutes when he struck the upright from close range.

Rodgers has now scored nine goals in his debut MLS season, even despite an extended layoff through injury.

Strike partner Henry doubled New York’s advantage in the second half, getting on the end of Marquez’s superb through ball to chip deftly over the onrushing Ricketts.

Henry could have made it a brace 80 minutes but followed Rodgers’ suit by hitting the upright, and New York survived a late David Beckham free-kick to move to third on the playoff wildcard standings.

The Galaxy remain top of the Western Conference and look unlikely to be unseated, but they will be disappointed to lower their colours to their east coast rivals.
