MLS wrap: Earthquakes rumble as Galaxy fall again

San Jose Earthquakes moved three points clear at the top of the MLS Western Conference after claiming a 5-3 win over DC United on Wednesday.

Steven Lenhart and Chris Wondolowski scored two goals apiece as the Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches in an eight-goal thriller at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Dwayne De Rosario put the visitors in front after just eight minutes, but Lenhart, Wondolowski and Justin Morrow scored to give the ‘Quakes a comfortable lead by half-time.

United, who were on a six-match unbeaten streak, cut the deficit to one goal when Daniel Woolard nodded home his first goal of the season, but Lenhart and Wondolowski struck again to ensure three points for the home side.

Hamdi Salihi added another for United, but it failed to spark a dramatic comeback.

Meanwhile, goals to Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero lifted Seattle Sounders to a 2-0 win over the out-of-form Los Angeles Galaxy.

Johnson scored in the 40th minute and Montero produced a long-range goal early in the second half.

It was the defending champions’ fourth loss of the season and condemns them to seventh place in the Western Conference table while Seattle’s third win in a row moved them into third place in the West.

In Massachusetts, Saer Sene scored once and added an assist to help the New England Revolution snap a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids.

The French striker helped New England overturn Jaime Castrillon’s 21st-minute goal, equalising in the 27th minute, before setting up Fernando Cardenas for the winner just before the end of the first half.
