Reigning champions the Los Angeles Galaxy slumped to a surprise 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on the opening day of the MLS season on Saturday.
Bruce Arena’s Galaxy went unbeaten at home on the way to the title last season, but tasted defeat at The Home Depot Center in their first game of this campaign.
The hosts were unable to hold on despite taking a 71st-minute lead thanks to an Edson Buddle header.
Defender Sean Franklin put the ball into his own net just moments later, before Argentine midfielder Javier Morales edged Real Salt Lake ahead with a neat finish into the bottom corner.
Fabian Espindola sealed the points for Real Salt Lake when he netted after an Alvaro Saborio pass on 85 minutes.
Elsewhere, MLS debutants the Montreal Impact suffered a 2-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Goals from Sebastien Le Toux and Brazilian forward Camilo Sanvezzo helped the Whitecaps to a deserved win.
The Colorado Rapids made a winning start to their season as goals from Drew Moor and Quincy Amarikwa saw them to a 2-0 victory over Columbus Crew.
In other matches, Chris Wondolowski’s 16th-minute goal saw the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution, while CJ Sapong headed in a stoppage time winner in Sporting Kansas City’s 1-0 victory against DC United.
