Romania international and Cesena forward Adrian Mutu believes he could have won the Ballon d’Or had he made the right decisions.

The attacker’s talent won him stints at illustrious clubs such as Inter, Chelsea, Juventus and Fiorentina, but his career was marred by a failed drug test during his spell in the English Premier League with the Blues.

Mutu – who Chelsea paid 22.5 million euros for to sign from Parma in 2003 – feels the cocaine incident may have cost him a shot at joining the game’s elite.

“Maybe if I had made other decisions in the past, I could even have won the Ballon d’Or at some point. I’d rather not think about that too much, though,” Mutu told Corriere dello Sport.

The 32-year-old then looked back at his proposed transfer to Roma three years ago, but feels he made the right decision to stay with Fiorentina at the time.

“I considered going to Roma. I have always had warm feelings for the club. However, we were playing at a very high level with Fiorentina at the time. In the end, I think I made the right decision to stay put,” he said.

Mutu has scored three goals in nine Serie A appearances since joining Cesena in June.
