Fit-again Manchester United captain Gary Neville can secure a new contract at Old Trafford, manager Alex Ferguson said Sunday.

“There will be no problem about a new contract for Gary,” said Ferguson.

“He will be up for a new deal, you can be sure about that, because he's a remarkable person.”

Neville, 33, is in the final year of his present deal and is battling to force his way back into the United side after making just one brief substitute's appearance last season.

He did however start last week's Community Shield clash with Portsmouth, earning praise from Ferguson for his showing.

But the United boss admits Neville will have competition for the right-back spot from last term's first choice Wes Brown and teenager Rafael da Silva.

“The way he has come back after 18 months is remarkable and to then play to the level he played against Portsmouth last Sunday was perfect,” said Ferguson.

“But it is going to be difficult for Gary to get into the team when you think about what kind of season Wes Brown had last year. Then there is the young lad Rafael da Silva – he's a player.”
