New striker on the cards for strugglers Cosmos

South African club Jomo Cosmos are looking to one of their former top strikers currently based overseas to add to their firepower.

Premier Soccer League basement side Cosmos have managed a paltry five goals in nine league matches, with three coming from Siyabonga Nontshinga.

Ezenkosi boss Jomo Sono would not be drawn into revealing the identity of the striker, saying the club will do so when the paperwork has been completed.

“He has not arrived yet as we are still finalising some things. He was supposed to arrive on Sunday, but once he arrives we will reveal him to the public. But now I won’t mention who this striker is,” Sono told KickOff.com.

Zambian Christopher Katongo has previously been linked with a return to Ezenkosi, but what may put a spanner in the works is that he signed a two-and-half-year contract with Chinese Super League side Henan in July.

Portsmouth striker Benjamin Mwaruwari, too, is also a former Cosmos striker, but the Zimbabwean-born marksman is currently contracted to Portsmouth after signing a one-year deal at the beginning of the season.

Also in the mix are the Malawian duo of Essau Kanyenda, who plays for Russian side FC Dynamo Bryansk, and Russell Mwafulirwa, who is in the books of Swedish club Norrkoping.

Kanyenda, in particular, could be keen for a return to the PSL based on the fact that he tried 10 months ago to cut a deal with Moroka Swallows but the move fell through when his then Russian club FC Kamaz claimed he was still contracted to them. He has since left Kamaz for Bryansk.

For Mwafulirwa, the Swedish season is drawing to a close and depending on his situation at Norrkoping, he could be tempted to make a return to Cosmos.

Of the PSL teams, Cosmos are the lowest scoring team at the moment.
