Nigerian clubs suspended over high-scoring matches

The Nigerian Football Federation has suspended the four clubs involved in two suspicious high-scoring matches over the weekend.

Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine FC were level on points going into the last game of the Nationwide League Division season, with goal difference likely to prove crucial in deciding which team gained promotion.

But the integrity of the league was thrown into the doubt as Feeders went on to beat Akurba FC 79-0 in their final fixture, while Police Machine FC ran out 67-0 winners against Bubayaro.

And NFF Organising Committee chairman Mike Umeh has now slammed the teams involved.

“It is unacceptable – a scandal of huge proportions,” he said. “The teams are suspended indefinitely, pending further sanctions. We will investigate this matter thoroughly and get to the bottom of it.”

Director of competitions Dr Mohammed Sanusi also vowed to hand out fitting punishments to those involved in the questionable scorelines.

“The teams involved, their players and officials, match officials, coordinator and anyone found to have played some role in this despicable matter would be severely dealt with,” he said.
