Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has heaped praise on club captain Lee Cattermole and revealed the player is expected to sign a contract extension with the Black Cats.
The 24-year-old midfielder joined Sunderland in a €7 million deal from Wigan some three years ago and quickly developed into a key player for the Black Cats.
The talented midfielder was even given a captain’s armband and boss Martin O’Neill is delighted with the player’s contribution since he arrived at the Stadium of Light.
“Cattermole has been excellent since I came to the football club – and he may well have been before, I don’t know about that,” the experienced tactician said to Sunderland Echo.
“He’s 24 and he’s the captain of the side. Sometimes he needs to keep his discipline better because over the course of the year I expect he’ll pick up a couple of silly bookings.”
O’Neill then admitted that the player was set to sign a new deal with the Premier League side.
“I don’t want to build him up too much though – particularly as he has a contract to sign here.”
Lee Cattermole has failed to score in 70 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats, but has earned no less than 28 yellow cards and was twice sent off in the course of the last three seasons.
Despite his poor disciplinary record, it is only a matter of time before the player breaks into England set up.
