Recently relegated Palermo have hired Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager.

Gattuso joins the Sicily club after being dismissed as manager of Swiss side FC Sion.

The former Milan midfielder could only guide Sion to sixth place in the Swiss Super League, seven points off a place in the UEFA Europa League.

Palermo suffered demotion to Serie B following an extremely disappointing campaign in which they won just six games.

Gattuso will hope to inspire them to an immediate return to the top flight after agreeing to a one-year deal with an option to renew for a further two years.

A statement on the club’s official website read: ”US Citta di Palermo announces that it has commissioned to Gennaro Ivan Gattuso technical guidance of the First Team rosanero. The coach of Corigliano Calabro, who signed a one-year contract with an option for a two-year renewal, will be presented next Friday.”
