Former Italy international Gennaro Gattuso is set take over as Palermo boss, according to the club’s president Maurizio Zamparini.

The 35-year-old was promoted to the role of player-manager with Swiss side Sion in February, but became the fifth coach to be sacked by the club in 2012-13 after overseeing just 11 league games.

Gattuso has been out of work since his dismissal, but Zamparini says he has reached a verbal agreement for the former Milan midfielder to take over at Palermo.

“I like Gattuso a lot and he will be the next coach of Palermo,” he told Radio 2.

Giuseppe Sannino, who was appointed as manager by the Sicilian side in March but could not prevent their relegation from Serie A, has yet to be formally sacked despite these revelations.

And Zamparini added on the subject: “Regarding Sannino, he and I will find a solution.”

Highly rated midfielder Josip Ilicic is expected to be sold by Palermo following their relegation, but Zamparini is eager to seek an acceptable fee.

“What would Ilicic cost? 15 million euros,” he continued.

“If it is a figure out of the reach of the Italian market then I will offer him to Bayer Leverkusen. German football is very rich.”
