Parma director: Cassano signing would be a gift to the city

Parma’s directors remain confident in their pursuit of Antonio Cassano and have labelled his signing as a “gift” for the city.

Cassano, currently under contract at Inter, played 36 games last season having moved from neighbours Milan in a deal that saw Giampaolo Pazzini move the other way. However, his goal return was not as high as Inter would have liked, only managing eight in all competitions.

A ninth-placed league finish saw coach Andrea Stramaccioni lose his job and new coach Walter Mazzarri is keen to freshen his side up ahead of the new campaign, something that has alerted Parma in their chase for Cassano.

The forward has enjoyed spells at Roma and Real Madrid but a move away from San Siro may be just what he needs to reignite his career and Parma director Pietro Leonardi revealed they were in discussions with Inter to take the forward on loan initially with an option to buy at a later date.

“We want to give Antonio Cassano to the city,” he told Mediaset Premium. “We are fairly confident, but have to put together all the different components.

“Everyone wants to conclude the negotiations positively. We are in no rush, but hope it succeeds because we want to give Cassano to the city, a great gift for the club’s centenary.

“I consider Cassano to be an absolute talent and always wanted to work with him. I don’t think age is relevant. Just ask Udinese whether they think Antonio Di Natale is too old.”

Other clubs, including Genoa, have also been linked with a move for the 30-year-old striker but Leonardi is confident that his side are in pole position to bring the player in.

“I haven’t heard of their (Genoa’s) interest,” he added. “I doubt Inter are holding two negotiations or want to sell the same player twice.

“Both Cassano and his agent are happy to join Parma and this is why I don’t believe the rumours of Genoa’s interest are credible.”
