David Moyes’ first game in charge of Manchester United at Old Trafford ended in a surprising 3-1 defeat to Sevilla on Friday.

First-half goals from Vitolo and Chelsea loanee Marko Marin put the Spanish side in charge of Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match, before Antonio Valencia pulled one back for the hosts.

However, any hopes of a United fight-back were killed off in injury-time as Bryan Rabello put the gloss on a fine performance from Unai Emery’s men.

Moyes plumped for a mix of youth and experience in his starting line-up, with youngsters Adnan Januzaj and Angelo Henriquez included alongside the likes of Ferdinand and Valencia.

Sevilla handed a start to recent acquisition Carlos Bacca, while rumoured Arsenal target Geoffrey Kondogbia also featured.

The visitors made the better start to proceedings, attacking midfielder Diego Perotti twice going close in the early stages.

The home crowd was silenced after 21 minutes, Vitolo slotting under De Gea after latching on to a wonderful through ball from Argentine Perotti.

Four minutes later United’s fortunes worsened, Marin finishing off an incisive attacking move to put Sevilla firmly in command.

Sevilla continued to dictate proceedings in the first half, Bacca and Marin spurning chances to extend their advantage, while Shinji Kagawa went closest for United 10 minutes before the interval, his close-range header well saved by Beto.

Moyes made two changes during the interval, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard replacing Henriquez and Tom Cleverley, but it took 20 minutes for United to finally pierce the Sevilla defence, Januzaj pouncing on a rebound from his own shot to square for Valencia to tap home.

United found momentum following that goal, and Moyes’ men came agonisingly close to a leveller as Lingard failed to connect with Fabio’s ball across the face of goal.

The game gradually became more frenetic in the closing stages as both sides wasted opportunities, Israel Puerto somehow missing from point-blank range for Sevilla, before Wilfried Zaha fired wide two minutes from time.

It was Sevilla who would land the final blow, however, as Rabello coolly wrapped things up after being put through by Kevin Gameiro.
