Ravel Morrison scored a double as West Ham United beat Sporting Lisbon 3-2 in a pre-season friendly on Monday.

The Premier League outfit trailed at the break, but Morrison’s two goals, and a strike from captain Kevin Nolan was enough for Sam Allardyce’s side to claim victory in Portugal, despite Sporting scoring a late consolation.

Allardyce picked a strong side for the clash, with Nolan, Joe Cole and Mark Noble included.

And they almost took the lead in the early stages, only for Cole to see his shot on the turn hit the post, with Nolan blasting the rebound over.

Sporting scored the game’s first goal though, and it came from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time.

Matt Taylor was adjudged to have handled inside the penalty area and Spaniard Diego Capel converted the opportunity.

West Ham levelled proceedings 13 minutes into the second half though, as Nolan – as he is so often is – found himself in the right place at the right time.

Modibo Maiga flicked on Razvan Rat’s throw and Nolan was on hand to draw his side level.

Just one minute after Nolan’s goal and West Ham took the lead, with former Manchester United midfielder Morrison responsible.

Again Rat was involved in the build-up to the goal, and Morrison produced an excellent finish, hitting a low strike from 25 yards.

Several substitutions interrupted the flow of the game in the second half but there was still time for Morrison to score his second, nodding in Cole’s cross from the left with 11 minutes to play.

William Carvalho netted in the 84th minute for Sporting, helping Wilson Eduardo’s free-kick in, but West Ham did enough to hang on.

West Ham will open their Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Cardiff City on August 17.
