Desperate to try and make up some ground in the Serie A title chase, Inter Milan will welcome Fiorentina to the San Siro on Saturday evening.

Inter Milan

Starting with the hosts, while Inter Milan might have seen their Champions League adventure come to an end against Liverpool earlier in the month, the Nerazzurri did impress with a shock 1-0 win away at Anfield in their second-leg meeting. However, although Simone Inzaghi’s side might have been looking to build off of the positives they showed on European duties, the defending Italian champions were last seen having to settle for a 1-1 draw away at Torino. Opening this weekend’s fixtures sat third in the table and four points adrift of leaders AC, the former Lazio boss has seen his side win just a pair of their previous eight matchups across all formats, a run that stems back to the start of February. With their recent inconsistencies highlighted by a 2-0 defeat against Sassuolo at the San Siro last month, Saturday’s hosts should at least be boosted by their most recent meeting against Fiorentina. Landing a 3-1 win when the two sides faced off back in September, Inter will be calling on a similar display here.

Team News

After picking up a calf injury against Liverpool earlier in the month, key defender Stefan de Vrij will once again miss out here.

Aside from the Dutch defender, Inter Milan have no other injury issues to worry about on Saturday evening.

Fiorentina

As for the visitors, managing to make a much-needed return to winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Bologna last weekend, there is no doubt that Fiorentina will be desperate to build off of that result. Making it no secret that they want to book a European return this season, the Purples make the trip to Milan on Saturday evening sat just two points adrift of breaking into the top-six. Gaining plenty of plaudits from across Italy, Head Coach Vincenzo Italiano has seen his side lose just one of their last five Serie A contests. With that run highlighted by a 1-0 victory against Atalanta on home soil, fans around the Stadio Artemio Franchi will still have a minor headache over their side’s issues in the final third. It should be noted, Saturday’s guests have failed to bag more than a single strike in any of their previous five matchups across all formats. While the Purples could be smelling the chance to spring an upset at the San Siro this weekend, they haven’t picked up a victory against Inter since 2017 and they should face a stern test here.

Team News

Despite picking up a knock last week, Giacomo Bonaventura is expected to play some part on Saturday evening.

Cristiano Biraghi also had to come off injured against Bologna after a strong tackle but should be fine.

Key Factors to Consider

    • When the two sides faced off back in September, Inter Milan picked up a 3-1 victory at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
    • Likewise, the defending Serie A champions are unbeaten in their last 11 straight meetings against Saturday’s opponents, a run that stems back to 2017.
    • Fiorentina are unbeaten in their last five Serie A matchups.
    • However, the purples have failed to score over 1.5 goals in any of their previous five matchups across all formats.
    • Eight of Inter Milan’s last nine matchups across all formats have seen under 2.5 goals by the final whistle.

    Conclusion

While Inter Milan might open Saturday’s meeting at the San Siro as a landslide pick with the bookmakers, we could be in for a rather cagey affair this weekend. With the defending Italian champions having to settle for a 1-1 draw away at Torino last time out, they have gained somewhat of a reputation for their low-scoring outcomes. Along with seeing eight of their previous nine matchups across all formats finish with under 2.5 goals, it should also be noted that Fiorentina have shown some recent issues in front of goal. With Saturday’s guests failing to bag more than a single strike in any of their last five domestic outings, a result of under 3.5 strikes can be found at quite attractive odds here.

    Verdict: Under 3.5 goals
