Both still in the race for an improbable Serie A title, Juventus and Atalanta will battle for three points in Turin on Sunday evening.
Juve have reignited their slim Scudetto hopes with five consecutive league victories, while La Dea’s poor start to 2025 persisted last week. But with Inter Milan and Napoli setting the pace, neither side is completely out of the picture.
Juventus
A resurgent Juventus have edged back into the Scudetto race, partly due to former league leaders Napoli losing form, now sitting just six points behind first-placed Inter.
With 11 games left, Italy’s top four remain tightly packed, and while Juve aim for a Champions League return after falling in this season’s playoffs, securing a top-four spot remains their priority.
Thiago Motta is still feeling the heat, though, as his side crashed out of the Coppa Italia last week, suffering a quarter-final penalty shootout defeat at home to struggling Empoli.
However, they responded by beating Hellas Verona 2-0, with in-form midfielder Khephren Thuram extending his hot streak—his opening goal on Monday took his tally to a personal best of seven league goal involvements (three goals, four assists).
That result marked a fifth straight Serie A win for Motta’s men, and the last time Juventus managed six or more consecutive league victories was at the start of 2023.
Extending that streak would put them level on 55 points with Atalanta, and history suggests they can at least avoid defeat: the Bianconeri have lost just two of their last 40 league meetings with their Lombardy rivals—both in 2021.
Still, their last Serie A home win against Atalanta came in early 2018, with the six clashes since then producing five draws and one victory for La Dea.
Team News
Motta—who played under Gasperini at Genoa – will face his former boss without the injured quartet of Francisco Conceicao, Renato Veiga, Nicolo Savona, and Douglas Luiz.
Pierre Kalulu is now available after several weeks out, but his centre-back partner Federico Gatti has been training separately due to a thigh strain and may miss the match. This could allow Lloyd Kelly to retain his spot.
Randal Kolo Muani, recently picked ahead of Dusan Vlahovic up front, was named Serie A’s Player of the Month for February. Only Vlahovic has been involved in more league goals for Juve than Kolo Muani’s fellow Frenchman, Khephren Thuram, this season.
Atalanta
Including January’s 1-1 draw, where Mateo Retegui netted the equalizer for the hosts, the last three league encounters between Juventus and Atalanta have ended level.
In fact, since Gian Piero Gasperini’s arrival in Bergamo nearly nine years ago, this fixture has seen the most Serie A draws: 11 in 17 meetings.
The Nerazzurri enter this latest clash still reeling from their humiliating Champions League defeat, which led to a public fallout between Gasperini and star player Ademola Lookman, with Gasperini hinting he won’t renew Lookman’s contract, which expires next year.
This week, ‘Gasp’ will match Roma’s Nils Liedholm with the second-most games in charge of a single Italian top-flight team (332), with only Juventus legend Giovanni Trapattoni (402) ahead of him.
However, Gasperini’s future remains unclear, and after Teun Koopmeiners’ departure to Turin last summer, Atalanta are preparing for more key exits in the summer, with Lookman the most likely to move.
Facing what could be the end of an era, Atalanta will aim to make a bold statement by securing their first-ever Scudetto, but they need to improve results fast.
Although they’ve kept clean sheets in four consecutive Serie A games for the first time since 2000, the Bergamaschi have drawn twice at home to relegation-threatened sides recently.
Last time out, they were frustrated by Venezia, which cost them the chance to draw level with Inter, and with a tough run-in ahead, further slip-ups could prove disastrous.
Team News
In addition to long-term absentees Gianluca Scamacca, Odilon Kossounou, and Giorgio Scalvini, Atalanta will also be without injured defender Stefan Posch this week.
If Swedish centre-back Isak Hien fails a late fitness test, veteran club captain Rafael Toloi may step in, or Marten de Roon could even move back from midfield.
In attack, Charles De Ketelaere and Ademola Lookman are expected to support Capocannoniere leader Mateo Retegui—this season, the duo has combined for 33 league goals.
Conclusion
Atalanta have scored the most goals from open play in Serie A this season (45), while Juventus have conceded the fewest, just 12, setting up an intriguing matchup.
Juve’s form is on the rise, while La Dea’s continues to falter, meaning the hosts are primed to win and draw level on points.
