Prediction: Uruguay vs Germany

July 9th 2010

Germany’s impressive World Cup campaign came to an end as they lost to Spain, but with third place up for grabs, Joachim Low’s side will give everything to say goodbye to South Africa with a win. Uruguay did much better than anyone expected, but they will need to produce something special in order to win this game.

Uruguay exceeded all expectations at this tournament, although we have to say they had a pretty easy job after qualifying from the top of their group. Teams like South Korea and Ghana were not easy to beat, but if Uruguay had finished in second place of the group, they would have probably been eliminated in the second round. Oscar Tabarez’s team played fairly well throughout the tournament, but everyone could see they were too dependent on Diego Forlan and no wonder they lost to Holland, with the Atletico Madrid striker playing through the pain in order to help his side. Forlan remains injured and he won’t be able to give his best in this match, just like his teammates, who seem to be completely worn out after the series of difficult matches. Luis Suarez is back after serving a suspension.

Soccer betting experts did not give Germany big chances to reach the closing stages before the tournament started, but everything changed after their first match. The impressive win over Australia was just a sign of things to come and not even the shock defeat to Serbia could destabilize the Elf. Without a real star in the team, Joachim Low created a magnificent unit, capable of destroying even the best defences in the world. The four-goal wins over England and Argentina left the world in disbelief, but Germany couldn’t repeat such performances in the semi-final against Spain and they were deservedly eliminated. Nevertheless, the best is yet to come from this side and if anyone can recover from the semi-final defeat and win the third-place play-off, it is Germans. Thomas Muller returns to the side from suspension, while Miroslav Klose is doubtful with back injury.

Conclusion

Germany have played impressive football throughout the tournament and they were unlucky not to have reached the final. Joachim Low’s side will give their best to win this match and thus make amends for the Spain defeat, and they certainly look better prepared than their opponents. Uruguay look completely worn out and with Diego Forlan injured, they stand no chance in this match.

Verdict: Away win Germany(2)

Best Odds: 4/5
