Newcastle are now winless from their last six English Premier League games after a 3-2 loss at home to West Brom on Wednesday.

Peter Odemwingie gave the visitors the lead after 20 minutes at Sports Direct Arena, but Demba Ba scored just after the half-hour mark to level proceedings.

Gareth McAuley restored West Brom’s advantage just before the interval, but Ba once again equalised for Newcastle, this time in the 81st minute.

Paul Scharner stepped up with five minutes remaining to put West Brom ahead for the final time and help Roy Hodgson’s side claim their second away win in succession.

Newcastle dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game, but dogged defending from the visitors and a lack of clinical action from Newcastle made for few goalmouth incidents.

Hodgson was forced to deal with an early injury to Steven Reid, with the full-back going over on his ankle in the West Brom box, and he was replaced by Billy Jones after seven minutes.

Five minutes later the tables turned on Alan Pardew’s outfit, when West Brom found themselves a goal up thanks to a precise finish from Odemwingie.

A perfectly weighted pass through the Newcastle defence from Chris Brunt saw the Nigerian striker take the ball with ease and place it past Tim Krul.

Newcastle’s dominance finally paid dividends when a Gabriel Obertan run came to a halt just outside the West Brom area thanks to a clumsy foul on the former Manchester United man.

Ba confidently struck the resulting free kick up and over the defensive wall towards the top corner of the net and past Ben Foster.

West Brom took the lead for the second time 14 minutes later and again Brunt was the architect.

He flighted the ball to the back post from a free-kick to find Scharner, who did well to head it into the path of McAuley and the Northern Irishman nodded in his first goal for West Brom past a helpless Krul.

Newcastle midfielder Haris Vuckic came agonisingly close to getting an immediate reply, but his long-range effort came off the woodwork to leave West Brom in front at the break.

Shane Long could have put West Brom further ahead early in the second half, but with the goal at his mercy he somehow managed to hit the crossbar with his effort.

Ba levelled for the hosts after 81 minutes, when he turned effortlessly around a static Jonas Olsson after controlling the ball on his chest and he powered the ball past Foster and into the net.

With five minutes left, however, the game took another turn with West Brom going into the lead for a third time.

Long burst past Fabricio Coloccini and lifted the ball into the area, with Odemwingie heading the cross into the direction of Scharner who was able to poke the ball into the far corner to earn West Brom all three points.
