Premier League preview: Liverpool v Newcastle

Liverpool can put the disappointments of the Merseyside derby and Capital One Cup behind them in Sunday’s clash with Newcastle United.

The Reds were left fuming following a series of refereeing mistakes in last week’s 2-2 draw with rivals Everton at Goodison Park.

Liverpool were then bundled out of the cup on Wednesday, going down to manager Brendan Rodgers’ former side Swansea City 3-1 at Anfield.

“It’s easy to say after getting knocked out of the cup but the league is every team’s priority and it’s no different for us,” midfielder Joe Allen told the Liverpool website.

“It’s another big game at home at Anfield and one that we’ll be looking to bounce back in with all three points.”

Liverpool are 12th on the English Premier League table with two wins and four draws after nine games, three points behind Newcastle in 10th.

Newcastle, who accounted for West Bromwich Albion 3-1 last week, are yet to win away from home this season.

But having exited the Capital One Cup at the hands of Manchester United last month, manager Alan Pardew hopes his side will be fresh in search of their first win at Anfield since 1994.

“We’ve got a week this week where we can get on the training ground, and work on the team,” Pardew told the Newcastle website.

“A Thursday game takes two days off our training schedule, and it’s showing. We need to get some rhythm back in the team.”
