Vitoria Guimaraes snapped a three-match winless streak with a slender 1-0 home win over a 10-man Maritimo on Monday.
Rui Vitoria’s side headed into the home fixture on the back of losses to Primeira Liga giants Benfica and Porto, while they were unlucky to draw 1-1 with Lyon in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
But they did enough to return to the winners list on this occasion, as Marco Andre Matias’ late strike gave them all three points.
After a goalless first half, Vitoria chased the game with several attacking substitutions, and their cause was made easier 17 minutes from time.
Cape Verde defender Gege was given his marching orders for a second yellow card and Vitoria quickly made their numerical advantage count.
Matias scored the all-important goal in the 78th minute and Vitoria did enough to hang on from there as they celebrated a needed win.
Vitoria have moved to ninth in the table as a result, one place and three points above Maritimo.
