PSG matchwinner Chevalier: If it went to penalties, I knew I´d save them

Paris Saint-Germain’s matchwinner Lucas Chevalier revealed his spot-kick confidence after his heroics against Marseille.

PSG retained the Trophee des Champions on Thursday, as they beat Marseille 4-1 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in Kuwait.

The European champions snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, with Marseille having struck twice in 11 minutes to take the lead late on.

However, Goncalo Ramos equalised before Chevalier, who conceded the penalty from which Mason Greenwood cancelled out Ousmane Dembele’s early opener, stepped up to be the hero in the shoot-out, saving spot-kicks from Matt O’Riley and Hamad Traore.

“I’m still being measured because it hasn’t been easy for six months, even the match wasn’t easy,” said Chevalier, who has needed time to settle at PSG since signing from Lille last summer.

“In the end, the team didn’t give up and I knew that if it went to penalties, I was going to save them.

“I was too determined today to help the team and win this trophy. I’m happy, still being measured, but very happy for myself and PSG.”

PSG have now won the Trophee des Champions on 14 occasions, including each of the past four editions.

But captain Marquinhos conceded they were pushed all the way by Marseille, who sit seven points behind second-place PSG in Ligue 1.

“They believed until the very end. They believed, but they didn’t succeed,” Marquinhos told Ligue 1+.

“It’s good to have teams facing us; it makes us grow, it challenges us.”

PSG face Marseille in the league on February 8, and Marquinhos was adamant Luis Enrique’s team will be much improved when that fixture rolls around.

“It’s a very important moment in the season,” he added.

“In a month, we’ll prepare for a better match than today and win comfortably.”
