Ranieri gets Moratti backing

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has thrown his support behind new coach Claudio Ranieri a day after he replaced Gian Piero Gasperini.

Gasperini was handed the reins in June, but was sacked on Wednesday after a dreadful start to the new season that saw him fail to post a win from five matches.

Ranieri has developed a reputation as a man club’s turn two when in trouble, as evidenced by his efforts in helping Parma avoid relegation in 2006/07.

The next season the former Chelsea boss took charge of Juventus and took them to third in Serie A after their relegation to Serie B as part of a match fixing scandal.

Despite resigning from Roma – who he guided to second in Serie A in 2009/10 – in February after a poor run of form, Moratti is in no doubt the 59-year-old is the man to lead Inter out of their current crisis.

“This is the best choice,” Moratti said. “I think he has the necessary wisdom to revitalise the team, both players and the whole staff.”

“We’re sorry for Gasperini, who has always been supported, despite some rumours I’ve read in the newspapers this morning.”

“Gasperini has done everything in order to make a good job, but he has had bad luck. I’m pretty satisfied by this choice, since I believe Ranieri has the necessary skills to make a good job.”
