Atletico Madrid are considering making a move for midfielder Fernando Gago at the end of the 2011/12 season.
The Argentina international is on loan from Atletico’s rivals Real Madrid at Roma until the end of the campaign, with the Serie A club having the option to buy the player for a fee believed to be in the region of seven million euros.
But Gago has yet to firmly establish himself in coach Luis Enrique’s starting line-up and there has been speculation that he will be allowed to return to La Liga leaders Real in June.
According to Ole, however, the 25-year-old is wanted at the Vicente Calderon, with new Atletico coach Diego Simeone making his compatriot one of his principal transfer targets.
Gago joined Real from Boca Juniors in December 2006 but never managed to nail down a regular starting place, and was allowed to join Roma on loan in August by coach Jose Mourinho.
He has made eight Serie A starts for Roma, coming off the bench on four occasions.
