Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs has reportedly been denied the chance to take over as Wales manager by Alex Ferguson.

Giggs, 38, has been linked with coaching roles for his country for some time, and has been tipped to become manager following the death of Gary Speed in December.

But The Mirror claims Ferguson has rebuffed the Football Association of Wales’ enquiries, even though they were prepared to allow Giggs to continue playing for the English Premier League club and allow him to manage the country in a part-time role.

The newspaper reports that Giggs is seen as a natural successor to Speed, but the FAW’s enquiries to United were ‘immediately rejected’ by Ferguson.

Giggs picked up over 60 caps for his country in an international career spanning 16 years, until he retired in 2007 to prolong his playing days with United.

The report claims former Fulham boss Chris Coleman is now in pole position for the vacant role.

Wales took their time in beginning their search for a replacement out of respect for Speed, but are now actively searching for their next manager.
