The Indianapolis Colts will reportedly cut star quarterback Peyton Manning from their roster on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old, a four-time NFL MVP, signed a five-year contract with the Colts last July, but did not play a single game for the franchise last season after suffering complications from neck surgery.
ESPN reported the Colts will make the decision official at a press conference on Wednesday to be attended by Manning and team owner Jim Irsay.
The reports state Indianapolis have decided not to pick up Manning’s $US28 million roster bonus, leaving him free to sign with any other team.
Manning’s older brother Cooper told USA Today the quarterback, who was voted MVP when the Colts won the Super Bowl in February 2007 with a 29-17 win over Chicago, was having a tough time dealing with the decision.
“He’s going through kind of an emotional time right now,” Manning said. “Until it was over, he was a Colt through and through.”
“I don’t think Peyton’s done any personal diligence on what the next step is.”
“Now he’ll have to re-evaluate and see what this next chapter reads like.”
