Germany became the latest European heayweights to suffer a reverse at the World Cup finals as Serbia beat them 1-0 in their Group D match here on Friday.

Serbia – who lost 1-0 to Ghana in their opening match – scored the only goal of the game a minute after Miroslav Klose’s red card through Milan Jovanovic in the 38th minute.

Germany had only themselves to blame for failing to follow up their opening 4-0 hammering of Australia with at least a point as Lukas Podolski – who squandered several great chances – had a penalty saved shortly before the hour mark.

Ghana play Australia on Saturday.
