(GSM) – Former England striker Alan Shearer was disappointed with Wayne Rooney’s display against the United States.

“We didn’t see the real Wayne Rooney on Saturday night,” Shearer wrote in a colum in the Sun.

“And while that does not concern me too much at this stage, it begs the question… why?

“I reckon it was partly temperamental, but mostly tactical.

“In the build-up to the game there was a lot of attention paid to Wayne and the need for him to control his temper, not to get involved with referees and to avoid launching any dangerous challenges – all of them valid points.

“But I just hope that didn’t remove some of the spark from his game.

“I am sure it won’t in the long term but I just wonder whether subconsciously, he was trying too hard to be on his best behaviour.

“Rooney needs to play with fire in his belly.”
