Spain prime minister Jose Luis Zapatero has described Barcelona as “a team of legends” after their 3-1 La Liga win over Real Madrid.

Karim Benzema gave Madrid an early lead at the Santiago Bernabeu in Saturday’s encounter, but Barcelona fought back and eventually bagged the full three points, much to the delight of Zapatero.

“Barcelona showed in last Saturday’s match against Real Madrid that they are a team of legends,” Zapatero told EFE.

“These are the best years in the history of Spanish football.”

“Every time you look at the way things evolve from Barcelona’s midfield, you realise that they play the best football.”

“Xavi is the absolute spine of the team, and then obviously there are Fabregas, Iniesta and Messi.”

“Barcelona put in an excellent display in the second half. Real Madrid are definitely a very strong team, too.”

Barca have gone level on points with Madrid following the Clasico, but the Santiago Bernabeu side have a game in hand.
