Hibernian moved closer to safety in the Scottish Premier League after a 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Sunday.

Hibernian, who sit above only Dunfermline Athletic on the table, kicked seven points clear of the cellar-dwellers thanks to their draw at Easter Road.

They could have been further in front though with third-placed Motherwell snatching an equaliser on 81 minutes.

Hibernian started brightly and took the lead after 31 minutes when Garry O’Connor lashed a superb free-kick past Motherwell goalkeeper Darren Randolph for his 14th goal of the season in all competitions.

And they could have doubled their lead early in the second half, only for Tom Soares’ shot to thud into the crossbar.

As long as the margin remained at just one goal, Motherwell were a threat and Nicky Law’s well-timed volley restored parity in the dying stages.

Motherwell had defender Jonathan Page sent off for a second yellow card in injury time, but it mattered little as both sides were forced to share the spoils.
