Tottenham Hotspur have failed in an attempt to sign Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, according to the club’s chairman Jean-Michel Aulas.

France international Lloris was reportedly Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas’ first choice to replace veteran Brad Friedel in the Tottenham goal.

However, Aulas has said the north London club’s bid to sign the played was swiftly rejected, and said Lyon will only listen to financially attractive offers if 25-year-old Lloris asks for a move.

“Hugo wants to play in one of the best clubs in Europe,” Aulas told French radio station RMC.

“This year there was an approach from Tottenham that was quickly rejected.

“If he absolutely wants to leave, we will look at the proposals but they must be consistent with what we want. If not, he will stay.”

Spurs will reportedly turn their attention to Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg after their bids to sign Lloris faltered.

Aulas’ comments came on the same day the agent of Bologna’s Gaston Ramirez claimed the 21-year-old has rejected the chance to join Spurs.

Tottenham have previously sealed moves for Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen.
