Sturridge: Chelsea must win a trophy

Daniel Sturridge has demanded that his Chelsea team-mates focus on the season run-in and win a trophy.

The west London outfit have been surrounded by speculation this season regarding dressing room clashes between boss Andre Villas-Boas and senior players.

But Sturridge wants the talking to stop so the team can focus on winning again.

He told The Sun: “It’s time for everyone to knuckle down, do their job and focus on winning games for Chelsea.”

“Everybody talks but what we say off the field is pointless because it’s not going to change anything.”

“You have to push yourself regardless of which manager you’re playing for. You can never get complacent and think you’re the best and should always be playing.”

“At Chelsea, we’ve got to get some silverware this season and make sure we finish in the top four.”

Sturridge also praised his under-fire manager and thanked him for giving him an opportunity at Stamford Bridge this season.

He continued: “Villas-Boas has helped me a lot. He’s been playing me for most of the season. I’ve never had a manager who has done that before apart from my loan spell at Bolton so I owe him a lot.”

“To play at one of the best clubs in the world and start every week is a dream come true for me. I love playing for Chelsea.”

The former Manchester City starlet went on to reveal that he would prefer a different position to where he has played this season.

The young forward believes he would better suit a central role but maintained that he is willing to fit into the team’s system if he is selected.

He claimed: “I’ve always seen myself as a striker and have played in that role since I was six.”

“I’ve played in all of the front four positions and I’m comfortable in any of them but I’m at my best as a No.9.”

Sturridge has broken into the international set-up this season, making his debut against Sweden before putting in an impressive performance against Holland in midweek, and the 22-year-old is now hoping to secure a spot in the Three Lions’ squad for Euro 2012.

“I’m just happy to be part of the squad,” he said.

“If I can’t get a place as a striker, hopefully I can get a place as a winger. Regardless of where I play I’ll give 100 per cent.”

“Hopefully at the end of the season I’ll be sitting on the plane with the England squad heading out to the Euros.”

“If I can achieve that, it will be a dream come true. But right now my dreams are to win the Champions League and FA Cup with Chelsea.”
