German top flight club Stuttgart will have to drop former international Markus Babbel as coach at the end of the season as he does not have a pro coaching licence, the German league (DFL) authorities said on Tuesday.

“An extension (allowing Babbel to continue beyond the summer) is ruled out,” said DFL official Holger Hieronymus.

The DFL and the German Football Association both says coaches should have a professional licence to coach long term, though there is a fast-tracking system for them which several former internationals have used while on the way to obtaining qualifications.

“It should go without saying that we guarantee professional quality in training (coaches) and that calls for a long-term commitment to take a course in football coaching,” explained former Stuttgart and Dortmund star Matthias Sammer, drawing a parallel with driving licences.

Babbel, 36, will therefore have to stand down in the summer.
