Sunderland duo Nicklas Bendtner and Lee Cattermole have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in Newcastle city centre.

The Black Cats players, both 23, were held over an incident on December 6, in which cars were damaged in the Stowell Street area of the city, close to St James’ Park.

Sunderland have yet to comment on the arrest of the pair, who have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police can confirm that on 15 December two men aged 23 were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.”

“It follows an investigation into cars damaged on Stowell Street in Newcastle city centre which happened about 10pm on 6 December.”

“The two men have been bailed.”

Denmark forward Bendtner arrived on a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light from Arsenal in the summer, while Cattermole switched to the Black Cats in 2009 from Wigan, having begun his career at nearby Middlesbrough.
