(GSM) – Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has stepped down from his post as Cote d’Ivoire manager after their exit from the World Cup.

The former Manchester City and England manager was appointed to the national side on a short-term contract three months ago, but stated that there had “never been a discussion” over his future following the tournament.

The 62-year-old has now been in four different posts since leaving England in 2006, with roles at Manchester City, Mexico, Notts County and the Ivorians all in a short space of time.

He recently put himself in the frame for the Liverpool job, with the Reds currently without a manager after Rafa Benitez departed Anfield at the start of June.

Eriksson stated that it was always his plan to walk away from the job once the Elephants were eliminated, after seeing his team exit at the group stage finishing behind Brazil and Portugal despite a 3-0 win over North Korea in their final game in Group F on Friday.

“It was clear when I took the job that it was until the end of our World Cup and that’s today,” said Eriksson, who admitted he did not know what his next move would be.

“I’ll stay (at the World Cup) some days looking at the football and then I’ll probably go taking some holiday,” he added.

“Then, we’ll see. I don’t know – something, hopefully.”
